SEO FAQ

What Is an SEO Consultant?

An SEO consultant is a specialist who advises a business on how to improve its visibility in search engines. Rather than running every task in-house, a consultant sets the strategy, diagnoses what is holding a site back, and guides the people who carry the work out.

What does an SEO consultant actually do?

The work centres on judgement rather than volume. A good consultant starts with an audit of your site, its technical health, its content, and its link profile, then builds a prioritised plan from what they find. From there the role is part strategist and part teacher: setting the direction, reviewing progress against real data, and often upskilling an in-house marketing team so they can keep the momentum going.

  • Auditing technical, on-page, and off-page performance to find the real blockers
  • Setting a clear strategy and a sensible order of priorities
  • Advising on content, site structure, and link acquisition
  • Training and mentoring in-house teams so knowledge stays with the business

Because search changes constantly, part of the value is keeping you aligned with what Google actually asks for. Google’s own Search Essentials set out the ground rules, and a consultant’s job is to translate those into decisions that fit your business.

Consultant or full-service agency?

The difference is mainly one of delivery. A full-service agency both plans and executes: writers, developers, and outreach specialists do the hands-on work for you. A consultant concentrates on the thinking, the diagnosis, the strategy, and the oversight, then leaves the execution to your team or to trusted partners. Many businesses use a blend, bringing in SEO consulting to shape the plan and an agency or in-house staff to deliver it. Neither is inherently better; the right choice depends on how much capacity and skill you already have internally. If you are weighing up the options, our guide on how to choose an SEO agency is a useful next step.

Not sure whether you need strategy, delivery, or both? A good starting point is to understand where your site stands today. Our free SEO audit gives you an honest read on your current performance and the priorities that would make the biggest difference.
