What Does ChatGPT Mean for SEO?

ChatGPT and similar AI assistants change how some people search, moving part of that behaviour from typing a query and scanning links to asking a question and reading a written answer. For SEO, this shifts where visibility happens, but it does not change what earns it: strong fundamentals still decide whose content gets used and cited.

How AI assistants change search behaviour

Instead of returning ten blue links, an AI assistant often gives one summarised answer, sometimes with sources named alongside it. Some searches that used to end in a click now end inside the conversation. The important detail is that these tools usually cannot answer a real buying question from memory; instead they run their own web searches, often several, and build the answer from the credible pages that already rank. In other words the businesses ChatGPT names are, for the most part, the ones ordinary SEO has already made visible and that the web describes consistently. Google’s own explanation of how Search works remains a useful anchor, because the same qualities that help a page rank also help it be quoted.

Why fundamentals still decide who gets cited

An AI assistant will only reference content it can find, understand and trust. That means the basics matter more than ever: clear writing, accurate information, a fast and crawlable site, and genuine expertise on the topic. The things that make you a good search result also make you a good answer source, which is why we treat AI visibility as an extension of solid SEO rather than a separate trick. An assistant cannot independently confirm that you are the best choice; what it can weigh is whether your signals agree from one source to the next, and it reads that consistency as trust.

  • Publish honest, well-structured content that answers real questions
  • Keep your business details consistent everywhere they appear
  • Make sure your site is technically sound and easy to crawl
  • Demonstrate real experience and back up your claims

So ChatGPT does not spell the end of SEO; it raises the value of doing SEO well. We explore that in more depth in our guide on whether SEO is dead because of AI, and our approach to AI visibility optimisation is built to help your business show up in both traditional and AI-driven search.
